Welcome You to Arun House and Coachman's Cottage

We hope you will have a comfortable and pleasant stay. Arun House is a Victorian farmhouse built around 1850. From here there are many places to visit and beautiful walks. The River Arun is a 15 minute walk from here, through the village of Bury.

Bury, mentioned in the Doomsday Book, was also the home of John Galsworthy author of Forsyte Saga. His house, Bury House can be seen in the village. There is also a village map beside the old village shop, which shows you the position and names of other noteworthy buildings. If you are near the village shop have a look at it. It has gargoyles, apparently it was the home of a mason who worked on Chichester Cathedral and he decorated his house with 'seconds'. Near the River opposite the Church is Jesamine cottage, the oldest cottage in the village and the former house of the ferryman. The ferryman used to be very busy ferrying workers to Amberley Chalk Pits, (now an Industrial museum) and staff to the castle, (now a hotel). If you fancy elegant surroundings you can have lunch and tea at Amberley Castle for quite a reasonable price, dinner is more expensive.

The River Arun is Tidal and can be quite dangerous. It cuts through the South Downs passing Arundel Castle and ends up in the sea at Littlehampton. The South Downs Way links Winchester and Canterbury via the Pilgrim's Way. It is possible to walk the South Downs from here but it is easier to take a car to Bury Hill, Bignor Hill or Amberley. The views are stupendous, and on a clear day you can see the sea, Chichester and the Isle of Wight. On the way to Bignor you pass a Roman Villa, which has the finest mosaics in the country.

Towns within easy reach are Arundel and Chichester, and slightly further Brighton. The whole area offers a multitude of interesting places to visit and activities. Please ask us if you want to know more.

Please note: We would like to help you as much as possible. We can provide transport, packed lunches, for a small extra fee and an evening meal by prior arrangement. If you smoke, we would ask you to smoke outside the house.

Breakfast is served between 7am and 9am, please let us know when you require it. Please leave your room by 10:30 am as we need time to prepare for our next guests. If this is inconvenient please let us know. Tea and coffee are provided in your room if you need more of anything please ask.
